NEQM has dedicated a gallery to the silk origami flower arrangements of Nikki Hu. These intricate and beautiful creations honor her mother Mary C. Hu and their fascinating family history before and after China’s Cultural Revolution.
“Sometimes the fabrics I use come from a scarf or a dress that holds special memories, and when transformed into floral bouquets, the memories deepen and become more meaningful,” Hu writes. “Making them is a soothing practice that allows the workings of mind and heart to become clearer and better understood. My origami flowers are a kind of personal language, and even though language may be imperfect, I trust their speech.”
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, NEQM Curator Pamela Weeks invites all of us to reflect on the cultural milestones, pivotal events and historical figures who have shaped our nation and enriched the complexity of our American identity.
